Thanks to David Davenport for submitting his pictures and story about his
recent return to Okinawa and of a relic hunt he was able to make. He and
his friend Chris were able to hunt in a area that has not been hit too hard
by metal detectorists in the past as his pictures show! "After about an hour,
we moved on into our next cave, it was tough getting into as you had to
squeeze around a coral rock that had partially covered the entrance, after
finally getting into this cave, there were nothing but large gun powder squares
covering the floor of the cave. We again found the normal stuff then Chris
decided to move this huge coral near the entrance, after finally moving this rock,
he started to dig into the mount of dirt and wow, another dog tag, this makes
two dog tags in one day!" - David ,
Using resources at the Battle of Okinawa Museum, David was able to pinpoint
the unit occupying the cave complex they were visiting. "After only a few minutes,
we found the unit number (Yama) for mountain 3480 in our books and found out that
the it was the 2nd Battalion, 42 Field Artillery Regiment who were under the command
of the 24 Infantry Division.
| Just about everything you need to start a collection! I like the gun oil bottle, that's hard to find in good shape.. | Service 1 |
.jpg) | There were three natural good sized caves, so we started in on the first one and after only 5 minutes I dug up a dog tag, man talk about luck! LOL |
