Located aboard Camp Kinser on the most Southern Military installation on the island of Okinawa. The Battle of Okinawa Historical Society Museum houses the largest collection of Historical artifacts of the battle and provides a free tangible historical link to the past conflict of the War in the Pacific. The Museum was the vision of retired U.S.A.F veteran Mr. Dave Davenport who sacrificed a tremendous amount of time, effort and money lobbying military authorities on the need to remember the sacrifices given by the peoples of many nations on this sub tropical island. Eventually, thru his efforts a small Museum was established aboard Kadena AFB in a WW2 era quanson hut. Later, the collection of relics was moved to its present larger location in building 107 at Camp Kinser. The Museum housed most of Dave’s decades of discovered relics from the island battlefields, bought militaria from islanders and U.S. collectors and donations of (bring-back) souvenirs from veterans of the battle. Today, under the stewardship of former Marine Mr. Chris Majewski, the museum receives many thousands of visitors yearly. With the relics on hand to touch and feel, Chris can impart his extensive knowledge to the patrons on the conflict that once surrounded them over sixty years ago. |
